Empordà takes its name from Empúries, the first Ancient Greek settlement in the Iberian peninsula, located just south of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà or the "Emporda Wetlands".
The Emporda Wetlands are one of the most important wetland habitats in Spain. They are rich in biodiversity and have been heavily impacted by tourism and construction in the last few decades.
We believe humans and nature can both coexist and benefit each other. This is why we have designed our most ambitious set of competitions yet, where we explore how humans should live within and alongside nature. We expect all proposals to consider not only minimal-impact designs and sustainable construction methods, but also demonstrate a self-sufficient and eco positive lifestyle that benefits the surrounding environment.

Empordà Polis - Self-Sustaining Eco Village Competition
Challenge: to design a self-sufficient eco village in the protected wetlands of Empordà.
This design challenge asks for a fully self-sustaining eco village that will sit peacefully within the site and allow both humans and nature to share the same space and revolutionises the way we live - providing a fully independent and minimal impact lifestyle, while retaining the comforts and technologies of modern day life.
The challenge is to work with this incredible landscape to produce lightweight and undetectable buildings that bond humans and nature. We expect to see environmentally-conscious structures that set a precedent for what sustainable architecture should look like. We expect you to consider every aspect of the design and building process: the materials to be used, their sourcing, how they will be taken to the site, how the buildings will be erected without disturbing the local nature, how the village will be self-sustaining, how the village will benefit the surrounding nature.
